Long-lasting Party Make-Up

Christmas approaches, and with it, the optimistic hope of a postbox (or inbox) just bursting with festive invites. Whether it’s the work night out or a seasonal sherry or two with old friends, here’s how to survive the party with your makeup, if not your dignity, intact.

1. They might languish in a drawer for ten months of the year, but November and December are the time to show your primers some love. Prime errthang that moves – your skin, your brows, your eyelids – and you have a chance of making it to midnight, without your makeup falling down around your ankles.? Try: Brow Primer by Anastasia Beverly Hills; By Terry Hyaluronic Eye Primer; Nars Multi Protect Primer.

Shop it here.

2. Keep your BB creams and lightweight bases for January, when we’ll all be bussing it home straight from work, for a dinner of water and gruel. What we need now is stamina, staying power and the confidence to know that, as we rock around that Christmas tree with wild abandon, at least our foundation looks just how we meant it to. Try: Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme; Stila Stay All Day Foundation, Concealer and Brush Kit.

Shop it here.

3. Strategic party dressing involves layers which can be artfully removed as the night wears on. Strategic party makeup, on the other hand, requires layers which won’t come off – no matter how dapper Donal from Accounts is looking in that Christmas tie. Your secret weapon? A good cream eyeshadow, worn under your powders of choice. Try: Laura Mercier Metallic Cr’me Eye Colour; NARS Eye Paint; Stila Smudge Pots. The new Max Factor Excess Shimmer shadow pots are another good choice.

Shop it here.

4. Felt-tip pen eyeliners are a great choice for parties; not only are they easy to apply, even after a preparatory glass of mulled wine, but the best ones will set on the eyelid, so they won’t budge or smudge. Try: Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Eyeliner; The Precision Liquid Liner by Kevyn Aucoin; Shu Uemura Calligraphy pen.

Shop it here.

5. Long-wear lipstick offerings have improved tremendously in recent years. Modern mattes offer the best of both worlds, being comfortable to wear, yet made to stick around – like that faithful old LBD. To further boost their wear-time, slick on several layers and blot between each one; this can also make you feel fancy and grown-up, despite wearing a ‘boa’ of tinsel.? Try: the old-Hollywood inspired Velvet Rope line from Lipstick Queen, or NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. For a budget alternative, look to Rimmel’s new Provocalips: these are double-ended, with a longwear liquid lipstick, and a moisturising topcoat.
