Unexpected sunshine beauty tips: SPF, sweat-proofing and more

With that unexpectedly beautiful weekend behind us, Aisling Keenan was a bit caught off guard in terms of beauty routine changes.

Unprepared for sweating, sitting outdoors and melting make-up, I dug deep into last summer’s beauty drawer and got to refreshing, protecting and paring back my routine…

Protect

SPF is my number one rule all year round, rain, hail or shine, but especially when we’re graced with the appearance of some sunshine in Ireland. It’s the first thing I do once I glimpse a bit of sunshine – top up my face factor 50 and then apply factor 30 to my arms, legs and bare bits. At the moment, I’m loving Avène’s updated sun protection range, the B-Protect in particular. I’m always pleasantly surprised at how effective and high quality Avène products are for such reasonable prices – this one is only €17 and contains anti-UV, anti-pollution and skin enhancing ingredients all in one.

Refresh

I love a good facial spray – however, I’m cautious about which ones I’ll use and when. During the winter, I will usually only use one that has a hyaluronic ingredient because otherwise, repeated use can actually have the opposite of the desired effect, leaving skin drier than before. But during the summer, thermal water sprays can work miracles for the skin – cooling, refreshing and drying to reset make-up, they’re ideal for warmer days.

Pare back

Change from a full-coverage foundation to a lighter formula, if possible, and opt for something nice and hydrating so that your skin doesn’t get too dry in the heat. I love the new Chanel Les Beiges Water Fresh Tint, which uses the amazing microfluidic technology that Chanel use in their skincare. It’s super light, adapts to your skin and feels super comfortable. It’s pricey at €60 but a little goes a long way. I also love Charlotte Tilbury’s Light Wonder – it feels so fresh on the skin. Another great option on a budget is Bobbi Brown Skin Long Wear Weightless Foundation, which provides good coverage while feeling light and nourishing on the skin.
