This is the most popular hair colour of this summer

Expect to see a lot more redheads this summer

I think a combination quarantine diet of redheads in pop culture, including Florence and the Machine, rewatching Shiv on Succession, reading Grace Coddington, seeing Charlotte Tilbury on Zoom and being inspired by Samantha Barry's documentary has made me, for the first time, reconsider my decade-long dedication to blonde.

A combination of ennui in lockdown life and perhaps a similar pop culture diet, plus Dua Lipa's latest at-home hair dye experiment would seem to have influenced the rest of us to think the same - Google has reported a 100 per cent rise in searches for red hair colour in the past couple of months.

Red wigs and details have been a popular focus of beauty looks on the catwalks in recent seasons, with acid-hued orange intergalactic sci-fi wigs at Jeremy Scott spring/summer 2020, red and orange streaks drawn in painterly pops into low buns at Moschino spring/summer 2020 and high-vis jolts of light-reflecting red at Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter 2020 runway.

“Red is the forgotten colour of every season,” says colourist Josh Wood (who created the Alexander McQueen look) to Vogue. “Look back through history and you’ll notice that many of the famous redheads are passionate about being so – they’ve got some guts."

"Red hair is all about attitude, and right now people want to express themselves more than ever before. There is a redhead in everybody, as long as you work around whether you are a cool red or a warm red,” advises Wood.
