The Make-up/Skincare Detox

The Make-up/Skincare Detox

The only type of detox we’re recommending here at IMAGE in 2019 is of your beauty stash. We don’t know about you, but we love the fresh start feeling of a new year, so what better time to give your make-up and skincare a clear out?

I am consistently amazed at how many people don’t know that the products we use have expiry dates, and I hate to break it to you, but they do. So yes, that Juicy Tube you’ve been hanging on to since sixth year has got to go. All products will have a symbol on the packaging called a PAO (period after opening) this is the advised time to keep a product after first opening;

Makeup

Mascara: 3-6 months.

A common culprit, but one to be most wary of as it’s so close to your eyes.

Eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year.

Gel and liquid doesn’t last as long as you are double dipping into a pot or tube. Pencil eyeliners are safe to use for up to a year as they are more hygienic with regular sharpening.

Powder Products: 1-2 years.

Eyeshadows, highlighters and blushers as they are dry, last far longer.

Foundation: 6 months- 2 years.

Pump foundations last longer as they are not exposed to air and powders will last much longer.

Lipsticks: 2 years.

Not as long as most people think (I certainly have a few I need to get rid of) these usually have a funny smell if they’re gone off. Clean the top of them occasionally with a wipe and make sure to always keep the lid on!

Lipgloss: 1 year

Never, ever pump your lipgloss as it causes air (and bacteria) to get in and it will go off quicker.

Skincare

Miccelar Water: 6 months.

I race throw bottles of these so this tends to be a safe one as we replace them frequently.

Cleanser: 1 year.

This will very much depend on the type of cleanser you’re using so be sure to check the packaging. If you’re using a cleanser from a tub, squeezy tube or pump bottle, this will influence the expiry date as air getting to a product decreases this a lot.

Moisturiser: 1 year.

Same goes for moisturiser as it does for cleanser, depending on your packaging the product will last that bit longer.
