The skin game-changer we all forget (that doesn’t cost a penny!)

The skin game-changer we all forget (that doesn’t cost a penny!)

Someone told me the other day that I had, and I quote “the hands of a 12-year-old”.

And while that was up there with the oddest of compliments, a compliment it was nonetheless. I took it to mean the skin on my hands was somewhat youthful, and it got me thinking about why that might be.

Everyone always says of people like Madonna, Cher, Goldie Hawn and the like, that their faces have been enhanced by the wonders of cosmetic surgery, Botox and years of great skincare – but their hands give away their real age where their face might not. As, in many cases, does their decolleté. People like Diane Keaton, for example, famously and cleverly wear high-necked clothing and neck scarves to cover this area.

What I realised about my hands was that, aside from being a beauty writer for the past decade and rubbing all sorts of concoctions on the back of my hands for testing purposes, I always, always apply whatever skincare goes onto my face onto the back of my hands too.

OBVIOUS, BUT OFTEN FORGOTTEN

So my hands were aged 12 where the rest of me is hurtling into my mid-thirties. What hadn’t occured to me until recently when I was speaking to Nausheen Qureshi, the bioengineer behind skincare brand Elequra, was the blatantly obvious skin game-changer that I now make a habit of.

I was advised to always remember to bring all of my skincare down onto my neck and decolleté as I use it, as that skin is as precious and needs as much care as the face. It seems like such a simple thing, but you’d be surprised how many people I mentioned it to that never thought to do it – particularly with things like cleansers. I know I regularly forget to tend to that area, letting harsher shower gels do the work.

Most of us dispense too much of our favourite skin products anyway, so this little addition shouldn’t add too much cost to your annual skincare spend but could lend a youthful edge to your skin.
