Six expert tips to ensure your make-up lasts all day and night

With the IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards just around the corner (this Sunday, March 10, to be precise), we’re talking all things make-up. It’s one of the biggest nights of the year and we want our faces to look just as flawless at 3 am as they did the evening before.

Not only that, we’re entering into wedding season and we need advice on how to achieve long-lasting make-up without spending a fortune. With that in mind, we asked six make-up artists for tips to ensure our make-up lasts all night long.

“The correct primer for your skin type will ensure your make-up stays flawless all day. Smashbox Primer Oil is fantastic for dry skin and will ensure that your skin doesn’t absorb the oil out of your foundation (which would make your make-up look patchy). Again, from Smashbox, I love their Original Oil Free Primer for normal skin. For highly textured skin you can’t beat Benefit Pore Professional Primer for any open pores.”

“Skincare first and foremost, then pair your foundation to your skin and lifestyle needs. The right powder can soften out your skin beautifully and help your make-up to last the day.”

“I don’t like gimmicks or unnecessary product on the skin. If I had just one tip I would say blending your product in and not just letting it sit on the skin is key. Taking an extra couple of minutes to gently blend and create the perfect foundation base is key to creating lasting-power. My final secret weapon is to finish every look with Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder.”

“Use a water-based primer or moisturiser – otherwise, the oil in these products will cause the make-up to slide after a few hours. Apply two fine layers of foundation and concealers, one before eye make-up and one afterwards, two fine layers of product will last much longer than one heavy application. Finish with a hydrating setting spray – I love NYX Dewy Setting Spray or Caudalie Beauty Elixir Spray. These can be reapplied throughout the day.”

“Applying your make-up correctly in the first place makes a huge difference. Then pop a compact powder in your bag for little top-ups during the day. I love MAC Studio Fix Powder – it comes with a little sponge so it’s handy for top-ups. I always carry my DB face concealer with me for under eye/blemish top-ups if necessary. I much prefer topping up once or twice during the day than putting on too much make-up in the morning. It might not budge but it looks way too heavy. Less is more.”

“Prep is so important for make-up durability. Use a good toner to remove any excess oils before you begin, find a primer that suits your needs (depending on if your skin is excessively oily or if your skin is dry), and a strobe cream or beauty balm to prep. Then, your foundation choice will come into play. Use dependable brands and find the coverage you like. Layer the foundation on and really buff it into the skin (so that it’s part of your skin instead of sitting on top of it). Finally, to set your base, use a good powder or setting spray. If you follow all these steps your make-up shouldn’t budge.”

The IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards 2019 takes place this Sunday, March 10. From 6:30 pm, beauty professionals will come together at the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road for a night of glamour, food, prizes and surprises.

Stay tuned to IMAGE.ie for behind-the-scenes updates and, most importantly, the highly anticipated winners’ announcement.
