These are the Instagram accounts Irish stylists are following for hair inspo in 2020

We caught up with some of the nominees in the Most Creative Talent in Hair category in this year's IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards, powered by Dyson, to find out where they get their creative inspiration from.

For many of us, our hair is our security blanket; it's our 'thing' that makes us us.

Most of us don't stray too far from the style we've had for years. We may shake it up every now and then by cutting in some bangs, or taking a few inches off. We might add a few highlights in the summer, only to dye over them in the winter.

But it's the familiarity of our hairstyles that make them part of us. How many times have you gone without make-up because you've relied on your hair to frame your face? How many times have you been delighted the wind blew your blow dry into the perfect little nook behind the ear just as that guy walked by? How many outfits have you felt the confidence to wear knowing your hair was really doing the talking that night?

This is why the relationship between hairdresser and client is so important. Sure, we joke about the 'going anywhere nice on your holidays?' question each time we go to the salon, but most of us have stuck with the same hair stylist for years. Once you find a good 'un, it's almost worse than a break-up when they say they're moving away or going travelling to 'find themselves'.

Leandro Santana, of Decode Hair in Dun Laoghaire, feels this relationship is just as important for the stylist too. "It might sound cheesy, but the passion for making people feel happy in their own skin is what inspires me. Being able to understand people is so important in this industry, and should be used as a main source of inspiration," he says.

Steven Anthony, of Easilocks in Dublin, agrees. "The buzz of a salon and seeing how happy we make people feel just excites me. Hairdressers are a little community and always look out for each other."

For Gareth Bromell, of Henshin in Limerick, it was the bright lights of Vogue that attracted him to hairdressing. "I always had a love for the big fashion houses' ad campaigns in my teenage years. I said 'this is what I want to do, create moments with hair and beauty all to be seen in Vogue'.

We asked Leandro, Steven and Gareth, all of whom are shortlisted in the Most Creative Talent in Hair category for IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards 2020, powered by Dyson, what inspires them to stay in that creative space.

"I follow so many different hair accounts, but the big hair companies such as Wella, Davines and L'Oréal are always good for a commercial overview of what is fresh and trendy," says Leandro.

"James Earnshaw is my favourite, but I also like McIntyres Scotland,  Darren Lacken of Crow Street Collective, Aidan Darcy and Lee Quinn. That's just a very small few!," says Steven.
