Darker days, brighter skin: Make vitamin C work for you

Darker days, brighter skin: Make vitamin C work for you

The evenings may be darker, but that doesn’t mean your skin has to lose that summer brightness. Here’s how to make vitamin C work for your skin, to keep glowing through the winter…

Benefits of vitamin C

It brightens
Our skin changes over time due to ageing and various environmental effects. This leads to uneven pigmentation. Vitamin C in skincare stops the biochemical reactions that cause uneven pigmentation to effectively brighten skin.

It defends and protects
Vitamin C helps counteract the effect of oxidative stress on the skin and neutralises damaging free radical molecules.

It firms
Vitamin C renews the surface of your skin, by increasing production of substances that keep skin looking firm, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Brighten while you sleep with…

Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Overnight Masque, €59 from imageskincare.com

This mask is one of my favourites for night time because it’s so light and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy (or like you’re leaving half your precious mask on the pillow!). It’s great for energising your skin before a big event – I always use it on days where my skin feels particularly prune-like to revitalise and freshen up.

Brighten with a concentrated formula

Obagi Professional C Serum 20%, €173 from skinshop.ie

This Obagi gem is a concentrated serum with 20% vitamin C that provides multiple benefits for the complexion. The formula is ideal for most skin types and it absorbs quickly without leaving the complexion greasy or oily. With 20% L-ascorbic acid (a fancier name for vitamin C) this promotes an even tone and texture and neutralises free radicals before they can cause damage to the complexion.

Brighten on a budget

Vichy LiftActiv 15% Pure Vitamin C Serum Brightening Skin Corrector, €36 from boots.ie

You can spend upwards of €300 on a vitamin C serum, but it’s not always necessary. I’ve found this Vichy one to be an exceptionally good brightening product – I would always use it in conjunction with another skincare product because it’s very good at just one thing, but nonetheless, for €36 it’s a good buy if brightening is your end goal.
