It’s high time we talked about the rebrand of cannabis for wellness as CBD oil is fast becoming as widespread on the high street as vape shops. In the US, where marijuana has gone mainstream for medicinal and recreational purposes, Busy Phillips, Mandy Moore and Olivia Wilde are counted as loud and proud fans of CBD beauty. Thanks to the reign of personal experience and hashtag selfcare and emerging science about the medicinal benefits of marijuana – weed has officially gone wellness. CBD oils are on a high and becoming more popular, so how do you tell which products are the real deal? I asked the CBD company Irish CBD Connection to break down the higher powers of CBD oil.
What is CBD?
“CBD is a cannabinoid that has grown hugely in popularity in Ireland in the last year. It is extracted primarily from hemp plants but it is also prevalent in THC rich cannabis. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound meaning people who use it will not feel a high.”
Why am I seeing CBD everywhere right now?
“CBD has always been legal in Ireland but it has only become popular recently due to the increased availability on the Irish and worldwide market.”
How is CBD oil legal?
“CBD oil in Ireland is legal as long as no medical claims are made in regards to the product as well as having THC levels below the required levels.”
What are the effects of using CBD oil?
“Legally CBD has no listed medical effects, however many people report that CBD helps with sleep, pain, stress and a number of other conditions but these are claims made by the public and we can not guarantee this will be the same for every user.”
How does it work in your body?
“Your body has cannabinoid receptors known as your CB1 and CB2 receptors, located throughout your body. CB1 receptors are found throughout your brain, nervous system and many other areas while CB2 are associated with the cells of our immune systems.”
Aside from CBD, what’s in CBD oil?
“As well as CBD, oils may contain other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC, CBDa and many more that all work together to create what is known as the “entourage effect”. These will all be contained in a carrier oil which is usually hemp oil, olive oil or MCT oil.”
How do you use it?
“CBD oil is taken sublingually which means dripped under the tongue and allowed to absorb through your sublingual glands.”
What are the benefits of using CBD topically?
“We offer a CBD balm which is applied topically. Topical CBD products are mainly used for skin conditions and localized pain. People with skin conditions such as eczema, acne or burns have reported amazing results using topical CBD products. We believe there is going to be an increase in popularity related to topical CBD in Ireland.”
Can anyone use it? Should anyone not use it?
“To the best of our knowledge CBD is safe and suitable for people of all ages but for people with underlying health conditions, we would always recommend they consult with a GP or medical professional before using.”
Is there anything we need to be wary or conscious of when shopping for it? Is anyone making any bold or untrue claims about their CBD oil?
“Because CBD is such a new product many companies are not being clear with their customers of what’s in the product. There have been products sold with little to no CBD content and this has given people a mistrust of the product. Where possible, request to see lab reports for the products.”
What issues are people coming to you with in the hopes for relief?
“Officially CBD has no medical values and it is regarded as a nutritional supplement. We have customers using our products in seek of relief for a wide range of conditions such as pain relief, sleep issues as well as arthritis, autism and Parkinsons.”
Is there only trace amounts of THC found in CBD oil?
“Some products will contain traces of THC up to 0.2% but a majority of products are now THC free as some countries operate a zero tolerance policy in regards to THC.”
The trace amounts of THC means it won’t get you high, is that right?
“That is correct – trace amounts of THC in CBD products will not get a person high.”
Is there a difference between hemp and cannabis?
“No, hemp and regular THC cannabis are both species of the cannabis genus. The only difference is that hemp contains less than 0.2% THC and regular cannabis can have in excess of 20% THC in some strains.:
What do you think is coming next in cannabeauty?
“We believe cannabeauty is gonnna be the next big thing in Ireland and also the EU. We have a few products in the R&D stages which we are hoping to announce in the new year.”
