Behind the scenes of the cover: inside hairstylist David Cashman’s kit

Go behind-the-scenes on the cover shoot of the November issue and discover the incredibly talented hairdresser David Cashman’s hair heroes.

David Cashman’s Kit

What are three must-haves in your kit?

Mr Smith Foundation Spray, €29, is great as a primer for the hair, put it in wet hair and let it dry in. It’s paraben free and sulfate free. It’s an Australian brand, available in Wildflower in Ranelagh Village. The Seat Salt Spray is also really good. Any of the Sam McKnight products, especially the dry shampoo, Lazy Girl, €25. You can get it online from Net-A-Porter but they don’t post aerosols so you’ve to go to London, so I’m down to the last little bit and trying to save it. Techni.Art Pli, €12.95, is a spray that’s fantastic for volume lift and hold.

What styling product should everyone?

Oribe Thickening Spray, €35. This is available from Space NK, one of my go-to sources for incredible hair products. It’s great for giving volume to fine hair. The dry texture spray is great too. We’re moving away from hairsprays and moving into more texture sprays, which allow the hair to still have movement, as opposed to old, cement hairsprays, that you can’t put a brush through, that set the hair and don’t let it move. Oribe would be one of my favourite texture sprays, but I do love Sam McKnight Lazy Girl and Cool Girl. I’m really loving the Ouai Dry Texture Foam, €30.

Ouai Dry Texture Foam, €30, available at Arnotts

Can we talk about the Ouai Dry Texture Foam for a minute, because I have it and I’m a bit afraid of it. When do you use it and how do you use it?

It comes out like a mousse and you use it after blowdry your hair and you put it in like a mousse. I think most people would be freaked out to put something in after blowdrying their hair.

Yes, me!

Exactly, but you’re not the only one afraid to put in a mousse into dry hair. If  you want a bedhead look and you’ve just washed your hair, mist water over your hair, use the Ouai Dry Texture Foam and tf will give your hair that gorgeous texture and piecey-ness. The Ouai Dry Texture Foam dries in really well so you have nothing to worry about and it gives it the most incredible texture and hold.

What about hair tools, is there anything you think everyone should try?

The Babyliss Pro  is incredible for curling and can be used for a super bouncy curl or a perfect slight bend. The ghd platinum+ styler is amazing for shiny hair. If you’re going to invest in a hair straightener, invest in a ghd. They will last a lifetime and they are the king of straighteners. This one has a detection that will knock itself off if you leave it turned on, so no need to spend the day panicking.
