Ask The Experts: The Perfect Bob For Your Face Shape

Ask The Experts: The Perfect Bob For Your Face Shape

In the November issue of IMAGE, on shelves nationwide now, leading Irish hair experts share the AW17 trends to know and the products you’ll need for great winter hair.

A bob length can suit almost all hair types and face shapes as there are so many different variations of the bob. Consultation with your stylist is key when choosing a length as it’s so important to work with your face, shape and texture. My favourite bob at the moment is a loose, textured bob with a soft take on Brigitte Bardot’s fringe. – Sharon Sheehan, AC Pure, 051 421288

There are so many bobs out there, there’s definitely something for everyone. I wouldn’t say there’s a specific bob for each face shape as most can and should be tailored to suit a client’s bone structure, however, certain bobs do work best on particular face shapes –a classic French bob is best on oval faces as opposed to round faces. Graduated bobs tend to work on everyone and I’d say lobs (long bobs) are pretty universal too. – Paul Hession, Hession Hairdressing, hessionhairdressing.com

The long bob with long layers always satisfies most face shapes. Whenever you opt for shorter bobs, face shapes really need to be taken into consideration. The more complimentary face shape is oval, so we direct the cut and style to move the face into an oval shape. That’s the key. I prefer to opt for the loose textured waves using a volume powder spray. It really captures the lived -in trend. –Paul Davey, Davey Davey, daveydavey.com

VO5 Instant Volume Powder, €5.99

There is a bob to suit every face. The length at the front is the main focal point, for instance, if you have a square jaw, you don’t want it to cut around your cheek because it will end up making your jaw look more square. When it comes to a bob, arm yourself with imagery when you go in for your hair appointment. Long bangs can be great with a bob as it helps break up the front, as some people can’t wear the hair straight down and long at the front, bangs really softens it out. – Christian Shannon, Brown Sugar, South William Street, brownsugar.ie

When it comes to the perfect bob, it’s all about the fringe. It frames the face. Whether you go full and blunt, short and choppy or long and swept to the side, you need to chat to your stylist and pick a bob length to show off your individual features. – Darren Lacken, Crow Street Collective, cscollective.ie

Before you go for the chop, think about what style bob you would be comfortable with.  If you are used to having long hair, keep long layers around the face, take the back shorter, keep it all one length and angle it so the front is longer. When your hair is dry, add a little texture to give your hair movement. If your hair is fine and you’ve always used extensions, go for a box bob – nice and solid. You can still add in your Gold Fever extensions so that base is nice and heavy.  – Katie Jane
