MEET SALI HUGHES

in The Beauty Hall, Arnotts, at 7pm

Sali has written two best-selling beauty bibles, Pretty Honest: The Straight-Talking Beauty Companion, and Pretty Iconic: A Personal Look at The Beauty Products That Changed The World. She’s a columnist?at The Guardian and The Pool, and’she has written for?Grazia, The Observer, Elle, The Telegraph, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Stylist, Woman & Home and Good Housekeeping.?Her own award winning website is one of the largest beauty forums for women.

Suffice to say that Sali knows beauty. And she can pinpoint the exact moment that she fell in love with it…

“Probably at around six, when I sat on my grandmother’s bed and watched her do her makeup. I asked why she wore it – we were only getting ready to catch the bus to the butcher’s in town – and she replied, ?When I’m wearing my makeup, I’m always ready to go on an adventure?. It never left me and I still share her sentiment now.”

When you get an opportunity to pick the brain of a beauty guru, you can’t miss an opportunity to find out which products they consider beauty heroes. We asked Sali Hughes to give us 10 of her hero beauty products, products that she considers Pretty Iconic. Could you even name 10 beauty products off the top of your head? Well Sali Hughes is a pro, and didn’t even hesitate.

1. M.A.C.’s Strobe Cream

“M.A.C. makes so many wonderful products, but this is among its most groundbreaking. Strobe Cream is an ungreasy but comforting moisturiser containing light reflecting particles to give glow and radiance to dull skin. It also mixes beautifully with foundation, or acts as a subtle highlighter on cheek and brow bones. It launched almost two decades ago, pre-dating today’s fashionable ‘strobing? products by some 15 years. And yet it’s still, in my view, the best.”

2. Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in ‘Pillow Talk’

“Lipliner is a must have for me, and this is the one I wear almost every single day. A natural nude-pink for defining the mouth, stopping lipstick-bleed and making lips appear fuller. Lasts extremely well and goes wonderfully with my most worn lipsticks – Matte Revolution in Pillow Talk and K.I.S.S.I.N.G. in Stoned Rose.”

3. Lanc’me Artliner

“Whenever someone asks me how to apply retro feline flicks to the eye line, I always recommend this. The ink flows cleanly and consistently, the long, thin felt tip combines the smooth application of a brush with the ease and convenience of a pen, and the smudge-free liner stays put. It’s a near perfect product.”

4. Kiehl’s Creme de Corps

“I can’t live without rich body cream slathered on after showering, and this, the ultimate treat for dry bodies and flaky limbs, is easily the most iconic. Made with super moisturising avocado oil and shea butter, it soaks in fast and leaves even the driest skins moist, supple and even.”

5. NYX Ultimate Shadow Palettes

“There are several crackers in the NYX range (the concealers, for example, are the best in their price bracket) but these 16-pan shadow palettes stand out for me because they represent such terrific value. The shades are well chosen and the colour payoff is remarkable for the price. A great way to experiment with colour, or build a professional-level kit from scratch.”

6. Smashbox, Brow Tech Shaping Powder

“A cleverly engineered product for adding volume to sparse browse, darkening and defining the arch, and filling in the gaps that naturally occur with age. The nib is perfection and the natural-looking shades are as all brow colours should be – flat, cool and murky.”

7. Shiseido, Urban Environment UV Protection Plus SPF50

“I know no one wants to hear it, but a broad spectrum sunblock is essential in protecting skin from premature ageing, uneven skin tone and some skin cancers. This is among my all time favourites for the job. The texture is light and ungreasy, it doesn’t peel or streak under makeup, and works exactly as it should.”

8. Clarins Cleansing Milk with Alpine Herbs

“There are so many products I could choose from Clarins – they are reliably wonderful in most categories. Blue Orchid Oil is plumping and smoothing on my dehydrated skin, while Energy Booster drops perk up any dullness in seconds. But Cleansing Milk With Alpine Herbs wins for being my first love. I didn’t hesitate in putting it in my book, Pretty Iconic: A Personal Look at The Beauty Products That Changed The World, because it’s among the only products I’ve used year in, year out, for literally decades.”

9. Estee Lauder, Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick

“I adore lipstick – it’s the fastest way to feel dressed up, cheered up and pulled together. For me, Pure Color Envy represents the gold standard. Rich, sumptuous, dense colour delivered in a comfortable – never drying or dragging – formula. The luxurious magnetic click tubes are beautiful and satisfying too.”

10. YSL Rive Gauche

“Without question, one of the greatest perfumes of all time. Rive Gauche has everything – a deeply sophisticated, elegant and wearable scent, a perfectly chic stripy design, and an extremely practical metal canister package (I wish all perfumes came like this). A truly iconic product that no beauty fan should be without.”
