Altercation in Galway
Two men have been charged after a car was driven into a group of people in Galway City over the weekend.
A 19-year-old and a man aged 24 were detained at a Garda station and they are due to appear before Galway District Court this morning. A total of nine people have been arrested to date as part of this investigation, eight of which have been charged by Gardaí to appear before the courts.
Libya
A global effort to assist Libya has gathered pace after a tsunami-like flood killed nearly 4,000 people and left thousands missing. Military transport aircraft from Middle Eastern and European nations, along with ships, have been ferrying emergency aid to the North African country already scarred by war. In addition to the missing, tens of thousands of people have been displaced after the huge flash flood slammed into the Mediterranean coastal city of Derna on Sunday.
Speed limits
A speed limit of 30 km/h is to be recommended for many roads across Ireland in one of the biggest overhauls of speed limits the country has ever seen. This will apply to all urban centres, residential roads, and anywhere with a lot of pedestrians or cyclists. In practice, this will include many parts of Dublin as well as town and city centres across the country.
Bordeaux botulism outbreak
The HSE has confirmed “a small number” of Irish people are being treated in French hospitals for botulism after an outbreak linked to a wine bar in Bordeaux claimed the life of one woman. Following a meeting of public health officials on Wednesday night, the HSE confirmed further cases in the French city, where thousands of rugby fans travelled to see Ireland play Romania in their Rugby World Cup pool game on Saturday.
The weather
A status orange rain warning for Cork comes into effect at 6pm today for 24 houra, along with a separate status yellow rain warning for 12 other counties.Met Éireann said that persistent and heavy rain will lead to localised flooding, poor visibility and very difficult travelling conditions. The alert for all counties in Munster, as well as Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Wicklow, also comes into effect at 6pm today and will end at 6pm on Friday.
