Israel-Hamas: Over 1,100 dead, relentless airstrikes on Gaza, Israeli authorities remove 260 bodies from festival
Israel relentlessly pounded the Gaza Strip overnight as fighting raged with Hamas around the Gaza Strip and the death toll from the war against the Palestinian militants surged above 1,100. The Israeli army said it hit more than 500 targets in the blockaded and impoverished Gaza Strip in overnight clashes, while fighting persisted in seven to eight locations inside Israel around the enclave.

Coalition party leaders discuss final Budget details
The Coalition party leaders met until the early hours of this morning to finalise most of the details of tomorrow’s Budget. Some items remain outstanding, however, and there may be further meetings today. Ahead of the meeting, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the issues that still needed agreement included tax measures, supports for small businesses and the health and social welfare budgets. Tánaiste Micheál Martin said the fundamental focus was on protecting people from the impact of the cost of living increases.

Shannon Airport is temporarily closed this morning due to “unexpected heavy fog conditions” and taxiway maintenance work. The airport has said all flights operating in and out of Shannon Airport may be cancelled or delayed this morning until the fog clears. Nine incoming flights have been cancelled into Shannon Airport this morning, while five departing flights have been cancelled.

Irish woman (22) missing after Hamas attacks rave in southern Israel
Twenty-two-year-old Kim Damti, who holds joint Irish and Israeli citizenship, is one of the many people unaccounted for following Saturday morning’s surprise attacks inside southern Israel by hundreds of Hamas militants. Ms Damti was attending an all-night outdoor rave with hundreds of others close to the Gaza border when the first rocket barrage hit close to 7am on Saturday, taking everyone by surprise. In the last phone call made by Ms Damti, at 7am on Saturday, she was running with a friend towards a car in an attempt to flee the rocket barrage. That was the last contact with her. Hamas gunmen opened fire on the partygoers as they fled the scene. Dozens were killed, and many bodies at the site have still not been identified.

Almost half of young women subjected to relationship abuse have suicidal thoughts – study
Almost half of young women (44%) subjected to intimate relationship abuse have experienced suicidal thoughts, while nearly one fifth (19%) said they had attempted suicide because of the abuse. The stark figures were revealed today by Women’s Aid as it launched a campaign to highlight the “severe impact” that such abuse can have on young women’s mental wellbeing.

Afghanistan earthquake: Race to rescue victims in Herat Province
Emergency teams in Afghanistan are racing to rescue people from the rubble left by a powerful earthquake that struck the west of the country. More than 1,000 people are feared dead after the 6.3-magnitude quake hit villages in Herat Province on Saturday. With communications down and many roads blocked, rescue workers are struggling to reach remote areas. Hundreds have also been injured. The UN and other organisations have begun to rush in emergency supplies.

Mist and fog in many areas this morning will gradually clear with hazy sunshine developing. However, staying misty in some coastal areas throughout the day. Warm and humid with highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees in moderate southwest breezes. Scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will develop in west Connacht and Ulster overnight whilst it will remain mostly dry elsewhere. A mild and humid night with lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in light or moderate southwest winds, which will increase fresh on northwestern coasts.
