Phibsborough hit and run
A female pedestrian in her 60s has been killed in a hit-and-run incident in north Dublin in a case that has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman. The woman was hit in the Cross Guns Bridge area of Phibsborough at around 9.10pm last night, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene, and Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
Irish nurse shot in Australia
An Irish nurse in her 30s living in Australia is in critical condition after she was shot at a house in the Northern Territory city of Darwin. Originally from Co Mayo, she is the mother of a young child, and was found with severe abdominal injuries at the property. The suspected shooter, a 35-year-old man, was later pronounced dead at the scene and it is believed he took his own life. First responders managed to stabilise the woman, but her condition remains critical.
Irish Cancer Society seeking extra €20 million
The Irish Cancer Society is seeking extra funding of €20million in Budget 2024 to secure better survival rates and quality of life for people with cancer. Chief executive Averil Power told Newstalk Breakfast that even before Covid Ireland was “far behind” the leading countries in terms of cancer survival and patient outcomes in general. “Ireland has the second highest rate of cancer in the EU. That was in 2020 and our cancer death rate was also 11 percent higher than the EU average. So, even prior to Covid, we were far behind the leading countries in terms of cancer survival and patient outcomes in general.”
Gambling in Irish adults
One in 10 adults are now either problem gamblers or report gambling has caused multiple problems in their lives, with stark new figures laying bare a new “public health emergency” in Ireland. The landmark study by the EESRI says that there are 10 times the number of problem gamblers in this country than previously thought, which it says has “serious implications for understanding the role that gambling plays in Irish life”. This means around one in 30 adults, or 130,000 people, are problem gamblers in Ireland.
Varadkar to join EU leaders at security summit
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is in Granada in Spain for two days of discussions with continental and European Union leaders on the major challenges of the day. These include Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, EU enlargement, the migration crisis and rapid technological change. The Taoiseach will hold bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as well as a number of other leaders.
