RTÉ Executive Board being stood down as new DG takes up post
RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst has said he is standing down the RTÉ Executive Board and replacing it with a temporary interim leadership team to continue running the organisation. “In due course, there will be a new permanent leadership team,” he said, adding that he will share the details later today. In an email to staff this morning, he said all significant decisions will be agreed “by the whole of the interim leadership team” and a record of discussions leading to these decisions will be compiled. “There can be no repeat of the siloed and at times secretive decision-making that have been at the root of the shameful events of the past weeks,” he said. Mr Bakhurst said he wanted to underline that RTÉ, under his leadership and that of the interim leadership team, will be an organisation dedicated to working closely with staff, “to listening, to being open and transparent, to strictly adhering to revised and rigorous governance processes and procedures, to being accountable and to delivering a public service to be proud of”.

Politicians seeking ‘moment of clarity’ from Ryan Tubridy and his agent as hearings loom
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members today expect to get advance material from embattled broadcaster Ryan Tubridy and his agent Noel Kelly which will frame their handling of showdown hearings due tomorrow.
Committee members have been left frustrated at the slow and limited information emerging so far as investigations into secret payments at RTÉ. They say tomorrow’s key witnesses absolutely have to bring clarity to matters. PAC member, Cormac Devlin, said there was a sense that the evidence of Tubridy and Mr Kelly was central to prospects of clarifying what was so far an unacceptable situation at RTÉ.

Protections that were promised to renters when the eviction ban was lifted have been delayed until the autumn. New laws to give tenants a first refusal on the purchase of a house if a landlord decided to sell were announced as part of a raft of protections for renters by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien when the Government decided to lift the eviction ban in March.

Housing prices 2.2% higher than this time last year
The average asking price for properties on sale is 2.2% higher now than it was this time last year, with an even steeper rise outside of Dublin than in the capital. However, the final value of sales aren’t going as high over the asking price as they were in 2022. A new property price report released today by MyHome.ie indicates that the housing market is showing some signs of stability despite repeated hikes in interest rates.

BBC presenter should only be named after ‘full’ investigation, says justice secretary
A Cabinet minister has suggested the BBC presenter who has been suspended for allegedly paying for sexually explicit images of a teenager should only be named once a “full” investigation has taken place. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk agreed there was a “public interest” in the broadcaster being named but said it would not be appropriate to do so “immediately” or until a “full investigation” had taken place.

Greek shipwreck: hi-tech investigation suggests coastguard responsible for sinking
Attempts by the Greek coastguard to tow a fishing trawler carrying hundreds of migrants may have caused the vessel to sink, according to a new investigation by the Guardian and media partners that has raised further questions about the incident, which left an estimated 500 people missing The trawler carrying migrants from Libya to Italy sank off the coast of Greece on 14 June. There were 104 survivors. Reporters and researchers conducted more than 20 interviews with survivors and drew on court documents and coastguard sources to build a picture of missed rescue opportunities and offers of assistance that were ignored. Multiple survivors said that attempts by the Greek coastguard to tow the vessel had ultimately caused the sinking. The coastguard has strenuously denied that it attempted to tow the trawler.
