Man arrested on suspicion of murder of man (80s) who died from suspected gunshot wounds in Co Kerry
A man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of murder by gardaí investigating the discovery a man’s body at a residence in Castlemaine, Co Kerry yesterday. Gardaí in Tralee said they are continuing to investigate “all of the circumstances” surrounding the death of Patrick ‘Paddy’ O’Mahony Senior, who was in his 80s. He died of suspected gunshot wounds but it’s understood gardaí did not find a firearm at the scene.

‘It’s a constant stress’: Government urged to act amid surge in families turning to food banks
More than 10% of parents were forced to turn to a food bank to feed their children last year in what has described as a “wake-up call” to Government that the cost-of-living crisis “hasn’t gone away”. A national survey by Barnardos also found the number of parents skipping meals, borrowing money to be able to feed their children and feeling they have not put enough food on the table has also increased significantly.

Catherine Martin to face Oireachtas committee questions about former RTÉ chair’s resignation
Minister for Media Catherine Martin will this evening face questions at an Oireachtas committee about her handling of events that led to the resignation of Siún Ní Raghallaigh as chair of the RTÉ Board. Ms Ní Raghallaigh resigned in the early hours of Friday morning after the minister failed to express confidence in her during an interview on Prime Time. The Oireachtas Committee on Media will hold a special three-hour session this evening to examine the controversy.

Home alarm companies targeted in dawn raids by competition watchdog and gardaí
The competition watchdog and teams of gardaí carried out “dawn raids” on the premises of businesses active in the home alarm industry on Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into potential breaches of competition law. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) confirmed that the raids took place on Monday and said they involved its authorised officers as well as officers attached to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau and uniformed gardaí. In a statement the CCPC said it was unable to provide any further detail about the raids or the identity of the home alarm companies that had been targeted, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Pick-up radius for school buses to be significantly eased in new proposals before Cabinet today
The pick-up radius for school transport is to be significantly eased, Cabinet will decide today. Under current rules, a primary school pupil must live at least 3.2km from their school to qualify for a bus place under the school transport scheme but those exclusion zones are to significantly contract. The primary zone will go to 2km, taking in all those lying outside this tighter ring and conferring bus-place entitlement. It is also hoped that the exclusion zone will soon tighten further, to a radius of a single kilometre, depending on funding.

A proposal to swap Israeli hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners has been sent to Hamas, according to reports. It follows several days of multinational talks in Paris involving representatives from Israel, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar which have tried to map out the basic contours of a deal for a temporary ceasefire.

Jesse Baird: Human remains found in search for missing Sydney couple
Australian police say two bodies have been found during the search for missing Sydney couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. “We are very confident that we have located Luke and Jesse,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said. Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, a police officer who once dated Mr Baird, was charged with murdering the pair last Monday. The bodies were discovered on a rural property in the town of Bungonia. Police said that after initially refusing to cooperate with the investigation, Mr Lamarre-Condon finally disclosed where the two bodies were located on Tuesday morning.

Macron refuses to rule out putting troops on ground in Ukraine in call to galvanise Europe
France’s President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday he refused to rule out sending ground troops to Ukraine, but said no consensus existed on the step, at a meeting of 20 mainly European leaders in Paris convened by Macron to ramp up the European response to the Russian military advances inside Ukraine.
