For all that we savour from our relationships, nothing is perhaps as memorable as the final words we say to a former partner before each goes their separate ways. But what if you never got to tell your ex how you really felt? The weight of words left unsaid between a couple can linger for any amount of time, likely because one person (or both) never got to say the things they wanted in the heat of all that emotional turmoil.
Well, a unique online project was created to give people the chance to do exactly that. Titled the #unsentproject, it was created by 19-year-old Instagram user Rora Blue, who came up with the concept as a launching pad for a photo series. However, the project has taken off, with the simple often funny, witty, poignant and downright heartbreaking posts striking a cord with thousands – 25,000 (and counting) to be specific.
The basic concept behind it is that Blue draws together hundreds of texts that will never be sent, asking people what they would say if they could send any message to a former lover, without worrying about might happen as a result. She asked each person the following: “State your first love’s name and type what you would say if you sent them a text message. Also include the colour that you think of when you think of your first love.” All the messages are anonymous.
“I started the project as a way for people to connect with each other,” she told The Metro. “I feel like this is a concept that many people can relate to and I wanted to find a way to artistically represent love. ”
Asked if any of the messages particularly affected her, she said this one still haunts her:
“I am sorry that I got behind the wheel drunk. I am even more sorry that you were in the passenger seat. I miss you every day.”
However, above all, she explained that the project showed her that, “love exists in many shapes and forms as the emotions that are written about in submissions are so diverse.”
