5 Ways To Combat Stress

When it comes to stress, people tend to fall into two camps; some embrace it, using it as a tool to help them succeed and others crumble under the pressure. Regardless of whichever side of the stress fence you sit on, TIME reports that those who are mentally stronger are better equipped to deal with tense situations. Below are five ways designed to help you deal when you find yourself in stress city.

And breathe…

1. Accept that stress is part of life

However we may try to avoid it, stress is part and parcel of our everyday lives. Rather than working yourself into a frenzy asking, “Why do these things always happen to me?” accepting that obstacles and problems are part of the journey will inevitably help when you’re faced with a challenge.

2. View stress as an opportunity

While tough times can drag you down, adversity can also be a chance to shine, especially when you reach the other side. If you manage to take it in your stride, stress can also be an opportunity to build their mental muscle. With each challenge, you can potentially grow stronger.

3. Keep long-term goals in mind

More often than not, stress is a cumulation of all of life’s little things flying at you at once. But such daily struggles are stepping stones as we make our way towards our bigger goals and dreams. On the days where it all becomes too much, keep your long-term goals mind, and you’ll get perspective. And remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day; your problems are often small in the grand scheme of things and you can start over tomorrow.

4. Remember to take time out

Those who tackle stress head on, know the importance of stepping away from work and dong things that make them happy; one of the best ways to combat negative emotions is by experiencing positive feelings. According to psychotherapist Amy Morin, “mentally strong people participate in leisure activities, surround themselves with positive people and make time to do what they love. The more stress they experience, the more fun they choose to have.”

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

The phrase “no man is an island” rings true when it comes to stress. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness or failure, on the contrary, it’s an indication of strength. If you know your limits and are able to ask for help when you need it, you’ll find yourself able to deal with trials and tribulations a little easier.
