5 of the best Amazon Prime picks coming in June

While we love a Netflix binge, Amazon Prime remains an up-and-coming, under-utilized streaming service. Here are five of their newest films and series coming next month   

Dating Amber

Set in Ireland during the mid-90s, Eddie (O’Shea) and Amber (Petticrew) decide to stage a relationship in order to stop everyone speculating about their sexuality.  Eddie is keen to follow his Dad into the military, while Amber dreams of moving to the liberal hub of London.  However, their ‘ideal’ arrangement begins to fall apart, forcing Eddie deeper into denial as Amber realises that a perilous future awaits her best friend unless she intervenes. A poignant, honest and funny look at the highs and lows of teenage life. The film stars Fionn O’Shea (who also stars as Jamie in Normal People), Lola Petticrew, and BAFTA, IFTA Award winner and Catastrophe creator Sharon Horgan.

Alex Rider

The series stars Otto Farrant as Alex Rider, a London based teenager who has unknowingly been trained since childhood for the dangerous world of espionage. Pressured to help investigate his uncle’s death, and how it connects to the assassination of two high-profile billionaires, Alex reluctantly assumes a new identity and goes undercover in a remote boarding school called Point Blanc. Isolated far above the snowline in the French Alps, Point Blanc claims to set the troubled teenage children of the ultra-rich back onto the right track. As Alex digs deeper, he discovers the students are in fact the subjects of a disturbing plan which Alex will have to risk his life to stop.

El Presidente

The highly anticipated Amazon Original series El Presidente will bring the story of the 2015 “FIFA Gate” corruption scandal to the small screen. Set against the backdrop of cities across Latin America, the U.S. and Europe, the series explores the sports scandal that rocked the world through the story of Sergio Jadue, a small-time Chilean football club president who rose from obscurity to become a key player in a $150MM bribery conspiracy at the hand of the infamous president of the Argentine football association, Julio Grondona.

Back to the Future trilogy 

Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox are possibly one of the best on-screen pairings ever and the Back to the Future trilogy remains possibly their greatest achievement. What would it be like if you could go back in time and meet your parents? This was what the film’s creators asked themselves before the idea took shape which saw Marty McFly accidentally wind up in the 1950s and befriending his mum and dad because he accidentally altered the course of history – and his own existence.

The comic timing, the soundtrack, that peach/pinky dress and the fact that every scene exists within the film solely to drive the plot along (so you’ll need to pay close attention to the finer details) makes the first film of its trilogy, in particular, unforgettable but the second and third parts are just as watchable.

Legally Blonde (1 & 2)

Now that we know a third season is in the works, there seems a no better time to re-live Elle Woods’ adventures.  Dismissed as no more than a ‘blonde’ and dumped by her boyfriend, Elle decides to attend Harvard Law to try to win her (loser) beloved back. This is no average rom-com as Elle realises by the end that she didn’t need to change for a man – she just needed herself all along. The sequel hasn’t quite got the shine of its predecessor, but it is as watchable for Witherspoon’s Elle along. We can’t wait for its third outing.
