This West Cork Island with an asking price of €5.5m has been sold – by video

If you’re looking for somewhere you can truly feel separated from the hustle and bustle of daily life, then this private island, complete with a total of seven houses, is well worth a daydream about.  

UPDATE: The Guardian reports that the island has been sold for its asking price to a buyer who has yet to step foot onto it, making the bid based on video footage of the island and its facilities.

Situated off the coast of Schull, West Cork, in Roaring Water Bay, Horse Island is entirely privately owned. With the stunning natural scenery this region is known for, it feels utterly peaceful. It can be accessed by a short boat trip from the mainland harbours of Dreenatra Pier and Rossbrien Pier and also from the fishing ports of Schull and Baltimore, meaning its owner is guaranteed seclusion. A 150ft pier and slipway makes for easy access by boat, or a helicopter pad makes it possible to arrive from the air.

Horse Island features self-contained electricity, sewage, and water facilities, and spans to approximately 157 acres. It originally was developed as a Victorian copper mining site, but the original mining village is now in ruins. Previous owners, however, have renovated and developed the island.  The main house has 6 bedrooms, and there are an additional six guest houses on the island. Walkways around the island provide access to all areas including the many sandy beaches.

The main house is a generously-sized 4,500 square feet, with a large living area that features double-height ceilings and sea views. To the rear, a sheltered courtyard offers full protection from the elements as well as a seating area, charcoal fired barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven. There are outbuildings for storage and a large wine cellar.

Each of the six guesthouses are fully equipped with kitchens and bathrooms, and have their own unique views. The island provides the perfect setting for outdoor activities, such as biking and walking, a game of tennis on the outdoor court, or trips to the many beaches. It’s also home to plenty of wildlife, including seals, who like to frequent the beach.

The island also has a farmyard, including a main cattle shed, implement shed and workshop and generator shed, arranged around a concrete yard.

With a hefty €6.75 million price tag, we won’t personally be bidding on Horse Island, although if we won the lotto, we’d certainly consider it.
