A Shopping Guide To Aarhus

A Shopping Guide To Aarhus

Want the inside track to Aarhus? Helle Moyna of Nordic Elements shares her favourite places to source unusual interiors, quirky fashions and the occasional foodie treat.

The Latin Quarter
The narrow, cobblestoned Latin Quarter of Aarhus is one of the oldest parts of the city, dating back to the 14th century and as expected the retailers are just as unique, with quirky caf’s, indie boutiques and cool design stores. A must visit is Ganni, a Danish fashion brand of quirky cool pieces, I invest in winter boots every time I visit. Afterwards, treat yourself to amazing freshly made Valrh?na chocolate and marzipan from Summerbird Chocolaterie.

Illums Bolighus
A must-see for any design magpie, Illums Bolighus is set over 10,000m2 and stocks everything from the Eames-esque rocking chair to Louis Poulsen lights. It’s a joy to potter about for an hour or two and I challenge you to leave empty-handed. A tea or coffee pot from the Arne Jacobsen-designed Cylinda Range by Stelton is a local favourite – tea and coffee is a very big part of the?hygge?lifestyle.

1+1 Textil
1+1 Textil houses a beautifully curated collection of Danish crafts hand-picked by owner Helene Vonsild including ceramics, throws and porcelain. Save space in your carry-on for one of Helene’s award-winning pillows or snap up a tea cosy by Signe Lybeck in beautiful graphic print to accompany your new tea or coffee pot.

Bruuns Gallery?
Denmark’s largest shopping centre has something for everyone, from S’strene Grene to Bahne, a small Danish chain carrying selected Scandinavian fashion, jewellery, homewares and lifestyle brands. The Gallery is a great place to spend a rainy day, and you will find some super restaurants alongside ceramic workshops at the Jaergergaards Gade entrance.

Designer Zoo
Tucked away in the Latin Quarter, Designer Zoo offers a laid-back look at Danish design, with a lounge area to enjoy the drawing, painting and photography exhibitions. Expect to find unusual and unique ceramics, quirky textiles and gorgeous jewellery all by native crafters.

Bolia?
For those looking for something a little more bespoke, Bolia design and make their furniture to order with the signature Scandinavian style: clean lines and the best of materials. The light-filled store is located in an old warehouse at the back of Bruuns Gallery and it’s a great place to see affordable Scandinavian design.

Paustian
Hidden inside an old train station, Paustian is a sublime blend of their own brand design and international classics. This one-stop shop offers everything from Lumio lights and By Lassen accessories to their kitschy-cool Mussel chair. It’s a beautiful showcase of well-known designer brands in a historic old building.

Georg Jensen
Hit the ?Str?get? or high street for bijoux brands like Georg Jensen with its array of stunningly wrought silver and glassware – everyday pieces with an elegant twist. I have a real weakness for glass and beautiful shapes – I love the Alfredo vases and Supernova candle holders.
