HIGH STREET HOLD-UP

We all have a vague idea, when we’re shopping in a British high street chain store, that we’re probably not getting the best value for money. With both sterling and euro prices on most labels, a little in-head maths will usually reveal that we’re being shafted out of a fiver here and €20 there. Annoying, but not necessarily enough to prevent you from buying the top, or travel to Newry to buy it. After all, there must be factors that us mere consumers cannot understand, such as taxes and transport costs … and the fact that everything just is more expensive in Dublin. That said, there are times when the price difference is really too much to stomach. Take for example this embroidered Portobello jacket from Monsoon, which I rather fancied and was about to feature in the magazine, as I thought you lovely readers might fancy it too. Until I saw the pound to euro price ratio, that is – £120 and €285. What the heck? And no, it’s not a one-off mistake. I checked other similarly priced Monsoon pieces to find the same mark-up. I certainly won’t be duped so. Will you?

Here here!! Can I just say I have watched the prices in Monsoon with horror for the last year!! They double if not treble the stg - euro price!! Do they think Irish people are stupid?? Check out their website and then rock up to Grafton St and be amazed!!
I bought a necklace in Dublin Airport in a holiday frenzy..it was 37euro...on the way back in Heathrow the same necklace was 15stg!!! Was so peed off...
The have pink ruffle shoes in there at the minute for 110eur..looked online and 55stg!!
Surely it's illegal.....rant over :-)

This is an issue which I come across so often, for example, I bought a jacket yesterday in River Island for 25 euro (on sale). But full price it was 40 euro, and on the website, which prices items in sterling, it's only 20 pounds. 100% mark up?! Most of the British high street shops are doing it, and getting away with it too. Why? I bet they know that they're offering us something that we can't get anywhere else, and they take advantage of that.
It will be interesting to see how Forever21 do things when they open here in the Autumn.
