Try A Modern Trouser Suit

Try A Modern Trouser Suit

There was one thing missing for me from?Amy Huberman’s recent TV legal drama, Striking Out, and that was a decent trouser suit. A straight leg, single-breasted, slate grey two-piece looks a little lazy, and if the fit is poor, it looks as if you couldn’t care less – not the kind of vibe any professional wants to give out.?Of course, The Good Wife has transformed all our expectations of the legal profession’s sartorial boundaries (I’m currently watching season 7), from Alicia’s slick black?trouser suits (a favourite in season 3) to Diane’s elaborate neckpieces?(a constant). But whether you work in a creative or conservative environment, there’s a modern’suit to fit?both work places. Here are a few to begin with.

Double-breasted jackets have come full circle and are modern again rather than retro. Paired with pleated culottes, this two-piece offers a really contemporary take on office wear. Perhaps leave the trainers at home if you’re heading into KPMG.

Military blazer, €165; volume pants, €125; Polly trainers, €125; all at Mint Velvet

A zip-front jacket adds an urban edge to a black suit. This piece is beautifully fitted when the zip is closed, so it looks just as smart as a button-front blazer, but offers a more unique version of office?attire.

Zip tailored jacket, €126; straight-leg trousers, €92.50; both at Maje

Colour is a simple way to reinvent a trouser suit. This burst of blue is perfect as we step into spring. Add a little more personality to the overall look by pairing this suit?with a coloured T-shirt?(red or earthy yellow would work well) instead of a white blouse.

Jacket with button fastening and cropped pants, both coming soon to Sandro

This Topshop tailored suit has plenty of attitude when styled with black ankle boots and a sheer top as below, but it’s a hugely flexible buy as it quietens down when paired with an animal-print court shoe and traditional button-front blouse. I love this shade of forest green as it’s trans-seasonal so great value for money.

Tailored suit, €135 at Toyshop
