It’s been a busy few months for crisis management in the fashion world. First Dolce & Gabbana mouthed off some pretty insensitive comments about children born through IVF, and now the fashion brand behind the iconic bandage dress, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, are in the issue-a-statement mode. The company’s UK managing director Patrick Couderc did an interview with The Daily Mail last week, and what he during the exchange said was pretty offensive to women. You know, his main customers?
Couderc works for MJH Fashion, the independent distributor of Hervé Léger in London, and thinks that certain women ought to keep away from the bandage dress. “Voluptuous” women and those with “very prominent hips and a very flat chest” shouldn’t wrap their bodies in the bodycon dresses according to Couderc. Other females in the firing line include older women who should stop “displaying everything like you’re 23” – we guess Advanced Style is not on Couderc’s to-watch list. However, the most backward pile of words to come out of this fashion industry titan’s mouth targets lesbians: “If you’re a committed lesbian and you are wearing trousers all your life, you won’t want to buy a Leger dress. Lesbians would want to be rather butch and leisurely.” Actually, they would rather buy a dress costing over €1,500 from a company that doesn’t stereotype them.
Of course Hervé Léger put out a statement to counter these body shaming thoughts.
