Last night, the fifth Girls Write Now Awards was held at City Winery in New York City, celebrating the fearless leaders who are evolving the narrative and igniting change for girls. The honorees at this year’s awards were some of our favourite women; Zadie Smith,?author of Swing Time, Sophia Amoruso, author and founder of Girlboss, Elaine Welteroth,?Editor-In-Chief of Teen Vogue,?Melissa Harris-Perry,?Editor-at-Large,?Elle.com and?Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, co-creators and co-stars in Broad City.

For nearly 20 years, Girls Write Now?has been dedicated to mentoring the next generation of women.

The event will include?a cocktail reception and hors d?oeuvres, awards program, performance by a Girls Write Now mentor-mentee pair, and a live auction to support our future. The evening was marked by the release of Rise Speak Change: The 2017 Girls Write Now Anthology and?the rollout of a three-year strategic plan to double the number of girls they serve and to elevate the voices of today’s most vulnerable, young women of color.

Girls Write Now mentors high school girls from New York City? who must rise above the race and income-based inequalities of the city’s public school system and the nation’s workforce. Through one-to-one mentoring with professional women writers and media makers, writing and technology workshops, and leadership, college prep, and professional development opportunities, Girls Write Now inspires women to share their craft and empowers girls to find their voices and tell?their stories. Girls Write Now?girls have performed at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, published original work in Newsweek, The New York Times, Buzzfeed and?earned hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
