Trump took the stage yesterday for his first Presidential address at a joint session of Congress and, well, it didn’t quite go as planned.
Trump took the podium to state, among other things, that “the time for trivial fights is behind us”, but you have to question what he considers “trivial”. Certainly, Democratic Congresswomen let him know that, in the face of his pledges to defund Planned Parenthood and reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling (which legalises abortion in the US), they don’t consider women’s rights a trivial topic.
Dozens donned white for the occasion, a ode to the Suffragette movement which eventually won women the right to vote after decades of campaigning. White, purple and green were the official suffragette colours and white has become a colour that celebrates women in politics – Hillary Clinton wore white at the 2016 National Democratic Convention when she became the first woman in history to accept the Presidential nomination from a major party.

“We wear white to unite against any attempts by the Trump administration to roll back the incredible progress women have made in the last century, and we will continue to support the advancement of all women,” Florida Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel, said in a statement.
The women didn’t simply sit silently either, booing as Trump called the Affordable Care Act “a disaster”, and – my heart honestly breaks a little bit writing this – announced a new office in the Department of Homeland Security called, VOICE, Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement. It’s not yet clear whether it’ll look at all crimes by immigrants or just illegal immigrants but it sounds like they’ll soon going be one of the same. It has a creepy ring of Professor Umbridge about it, doesn’t it? Just swap the sickly pink for orange.
Only seeing a sea of white in the crowd could have lifted our spirits and it seems Twitter was equally impressed by the simple show of solidarity. Check out the best tweets from the evening.

And here we were thinking the Best Picture fiasco would be the biggest mistake we’d see in front of a live audience this week. #JointAddress

Oops. I fainted for a moment when Trump hailed himself as a leader of women’s empowerment. Did I miss much?
