5 Presidential-Inspired Movies To Get You Into The Election Mood

America, we hope, is about to make history (for the right reasons). On the off chance that you’re not yet smothered with the campaign flu, here are five perfect presidential-inspired movies to get you in the mood for tomorrow’s results.

1. The American President (1995)

Starring Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, and Martin Sheen,?The American President is a 1995 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Rob Reiner that follows US President lobbyist?Ellen Wade (Annette Bening) who falls in love with her commander in chief. It’s soft, it’s fluffy, it’s romantic, and it’s pretty perfect if you’re feeling a bit on edge tonight.

2. Air Force One (1997)

What better combination than a young heroic Harrison Ford as President, and a heart-stopping emergency, ey? Ford plays President James Marshall whose unfortunate plane – Air Force One – is hijacked by a Russian terrorist (played by Gary Oldman),?following a speech insisting the US won’t negotiate with terrorists. Warning: you might want to avoid this if your blood pressure is already skyrocketing, but it’s a good watch nonetheless.

3. All The President’s Men (1976)

This retro movie follows two reporters working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (played by Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (played by Dustin Hoffman), who research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat?(Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follows the money all the way to the top.?

4. The Contender (2000)

This one is an underrated gem featuring a career-best performance from veteran?actor Gary Oldman and centers on Senator Laine Hanson (played by Joan Allen), a contender for US Vice President, whose reputation is at stake when a scandalous video emerges. Republican Congressman Shelley Runyon (played by Gary Oldman) believes she is unqualified for the position and stops at nothing to condemn her. Jeff Bridges also shines as a charismatic?US president.

5. Lincoln (2000)

This brilliant American epic directed by Steven Spielberg, stars an uncanny Daniel Day-Lewis in an Oscar-winning turn as United States President Abraham Lincoln.?As the Civil War continues to rage, America’s enigmatic president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and in his own cabinet as a result of on the decision to emancipate the slaves. It’s a fantastic watch on every level.
