Mother Figures

Mother Figures

Julie Bowen and Sarah Hyland on stage.

Sometimes in life we become so involved with the TV shows we watch, or the movies we hold dear to our hearts, we forget that these people aren’t in real relationships, once the director calls cut. And sometimes that hurts us (we’re a little tired and emotional today, alright?) because we just want to imagine that Monica and Chandler are really married in real life, that Miranda, Carrie, Charlotte and Samantha really are the best of friends and that Frasier and Niles Crane are really brothers.

Who else do you hold this feeling for?

Well, today it seems some of those relationships do have some weight to them, and in real life too. Stars of Modern Family Sarah Hyland (who plays the eldest daughter) and Julie Bowen (who plays the mum) have clearly carried their mother/daughter bond beyond the popular show as Bowen recently ran to Hyland’s rescue in dealing with a troublesome ex boyfriend. And that’s what mother type figures are there for, right?

Sarah Hyland and boyfriend.

Unfortunately for Hyland, it wasn’t as simple as having Julie phone him up and end it. The Emmy Award winning star enlisted the help of her on screen mother to help ‘peacefully end [her] relationship’ with Matthew Prokop, her ex boyfriend of five years with whom Hyland reportedly endured an abusive relationship. TMZ have the full and upsetting details on what Hyland experienced here, including court documents in which Hyland claims that Prokop pinned her against a car and proceeded to choke her. Understandably, the young star reached a point where a break up intervention with people she could trust was the only option.

We wish her all the best in moving past this difficult time.

Who do you turn to when life gets messy? Who are your mother figures?
